I'm confused by the webmention part of this statement. Do you not have control over how webmentions are displayed under your blog posts?

I think the phrase is referring to the desire to have something both ways, to have something without paying for it

I think the expression is meant to be understood as "you want to eat your cake and have it too", i.e. you still want the cake after you've eaten it, i.e. you want things both ways. Or, at least, that's the only way it makes sense to me.
